We are seeking highly motivated and experienced Fish Hatchery Specialists to work alongside a diverse team to support salmon and trout conservation while providing sustainable fish and wildlife recreational opportunities in the state of Washington. 
 
We are recruiting to hire at the Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 or 2 level, and we will train a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 up to the Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 level.
 
Depending on which level you are hired at, your monthly salary range will be as follows:
 
Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 - $2,957.00 - $3,821.00
Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 - $3,246.00 - $4,216.00

Some of what our Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 does,
Fish Culture Duties:
  • Calculate and feeds fish.
  • Administer therapeutics, calculates, and administers drugs as prescribed. 
  • Monitors egg development and production. Including egg picking, inventory, and transport.
  • Spawning, sorting, surplusing adult salmon and steelhead.
  • All fish culture aspects related to rearing salmon captive broodstock.

Record Keeping and Reporting:
  • Record spawning data such as adult crosses and PIT tag numbers
  • Fills out standard report forms. Accurately fills out agency forms such as fish transfer tickets, hatchery invoice tickets, etc.
  • Submits complete and accurate forms as required.

Operation and Maintenance of Facility and Equipment:
  • Installation and daily maintenance of instream adult collection weirs
  • Assist in setup and operation of remote acclimation sites. 
  • Maintains proper water flow and rearing environments.
  • Responds to alarms, determining and taking appropriate action.
  • Monitors and maintains facility support systems.
  • Actively identifies safety hazards and acts or recommends remedies as appropriate.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 
Work Setting, including hazards:  
  1. Walking, climbing, lifting, and carrying or moving 50lbs frequently. 
  2. Outdoor work in all weather conditions; extreme heat, freezing cold, rain, wind, snow, walking on river, through trees/brush, gill netting, seining, gaffing. 
  3. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
Schedule:  
  1. 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. - work hours can vary greatly at different times of the year depending on the workload and weather conditions. 
Standby:    
  1. Standby duties are assigned to this position. 
  2. Standby entails the employee being responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining 16 hours of the day after the regular 8-hour shift is over. While on standby this position will work ten (10) days on and be off four (4) days.
  3. While on standby, employees must be able to respond to alarms within 15 minutes.
  4. All applicants applying for this position should understand that standby is a requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series.
Travel:
  • Travel within complex as needed.
Housing: 
  • Housing is not provided for this position.
Tools and Equipment:
  1. Table saw, miter saw, skill saw, chainsaw, reciprocating saw, drills, weed eater, lawn mowers, leaf blower, hand-powered sprayers, gas & electric pumps, welders, hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, hand saws, pruners, shovels, rakes.
Customer Interactions:
  1. Provide public contacts, tours, and communications as needed. 

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: 
This Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (In-Training) series provides mentoring and career development opportunities for candidates with limited hatchery and fish culture experience. 
Candidates will be hired as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 or 2, dependent on skills and experience.
Upon satisfactory completion of the 12-month in-training plan, the selected candidate will automatically be promoted to a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2.
Required Qualifications for the Fish Hatchery Specialist 1:
  • Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.

  Or
  • An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology, biology, or a closely allied field.

Or
  • Three (3) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology or a closely allied field.

Or
  • Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school.

Required Qualifications for the Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (Goal Class):
  • Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.
Or
  • One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1.

Or 
  • An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field And one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery. 

Or 
  • Three (3) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field And one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

Or 
  • Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school And one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery. 

For all of the above: 
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 
  • A valid driver’s license is required. 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • One season experience collecting adult salmon brood stock.
  • One season experience operating instream adult traps. 
  • At least two (2) years of experience caring for chinook captive broodstock.
