The job of an Industrial Insurance Underwriter is complex. We are seeking candidates who are passionate about providing exceptional customer service. You will work with employers providing assistance and education over the phone, answering customer questions and functioning as a liaison between several L&I program areas, staff and clients. You will interpret laws and regulations, provide policy and procedural clarification, and correct unresolved or recurring problems. This position is deadline driven and your ability to be present for work daily will be instrumental in your success.

Duties

An Industrial Insurance Underwriter's responsibility is to learn during the initial six months where you will receive classroom training and on the job experience. After the first 6 months you will become proficient at completing all aspects of your job. Your attendance will be essential in your success. You're expected to ask questions and communicate frequently with your trainer and supervisor.

Some of what you’ll do:
  • Provide a high level of customer service through phone interactions.
  • Manage policyholder accounts; update policy information, process correspondence and quarterly reports, correct errors and deficiencies, update risk classification, calculate and adjust rates, and make determinations regarding refunds.
  • Administer the risk classification program to ensure employers are properly underwritten and classified based on the hazardous exposure of their industry.
  • Respond to questions and resolve problems regarding account issues. 
  • Receive, review, and process documentation related to workers' compensation claims filed because of an on-the-job injury or occupational disease claim.
  • Assist and educate employers in processing workers' compensation claims by interpreting and explaining laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Obtain information, provide instruction, explain decisions/computations, discuss and authorize future actions, and compose correspondence.
  • Ability to receive and apply critical feedback regarding your job performance both in and out of the training environment

Qualifications

REQUIRED:
 
Individuals with an Associate's degree with a field of focus involving tax liabilities, insurance benefits, risk classification, accounting or bookkeeping work, research, statistical or management analysis, or other related fields.
 
Additional qualifying experience may substitute year for year for required education. This experience must include at minimum two (2) years of direct customer service.
 
The incumbent of this position must demonstrate and adhere to the L&I Core Competencies.
 
DESIRED: 

Knowledge of basic principles of underwriting, insurance, auditing and accounting, in-depth knowledge of laws and regulation relating to industrial insurance, wage and employment practices, department operations, and ever-changing industries and policies.

Telework is dependent upon business needs and supervisor approval. While in training, the incumbent in this position will be required to work in the office. Once the training period has successfully been completed, a flexible schedule may be considered.  The duty station for this position is Tumwater, Washington.
