Archaeological Technician

Job Overview
The archeological technician will assist with inventory, evaluation, monitoring, and overall support to heritage 
resource management, including collection of field data to identify heritage sites, generate determinations of 
effect, and determinations of eligibility for a varied program of work on the East or West Zone of the Superior 
National Forest. Each zone is over 1 million acres and includes the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. 
This is an arduous position that involves lifting and carrying 50+ pound packs and the ability to travel extended 
distances by canoe, motorboat, ATV, or on foot. 
Responsibilities and Duties
• Basic archaeological field surveys by walking over the landscape and searching for archaeological 
features and artifacts
• Records data and prepares survey records
• Assists with excavation and testing of archaeological sites, including careful recovery of materials
• Processes artifacts recovered from the field
• Identifies, labels, and packages artifacts for curation
• Communicates information to other resource specialists
• Collects and maintains geospatial archaeological data
• Conducts fieldwork in backcountry environments
• Uses mapping equipment like Field Maps, ArcPro, Avenza
• Assist with project review and drafting correspondence for SHPO/Tribal consultation.
• Assists with campsite monitoring and testing in the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness, which 
includes extended (up to 8 days) overnight trips
Qualifications
• Driver’s license
• Bachelor's degree in Anthropology or Archaeology
• Hiking up to 7 miles in a day with a 50 lb pack
• Familiarity (or willing to gain competence) in watercraft safety
• Comfortable camping with no cell service
Minimum Requirements
● Completion of 2 years at an accredited university, an Associate’s degree, or higher 
● US citizenship or permanent residency. RAs must undergo a government background check if selected.
● Participation in US Forest Service Orientation Training scheduled for July 2024

 8 month duration with opportunity for full time permanent position.
