Hydrologic Data Analyst Student Contractor

The prospective student contractor will be responsible for doing an analysis of metabolism in Brownlee Reservoir using existing continuous data spanning multiple years, depths, and reservoir locations.

Duties and assignments may include:

  • Review data for reasonable data quality, flagging observations that fall outside of quality assurance bounds.
  • Use LakeMetabolizer or a similar R package to do a metabolism analysis for Brownlee Reservoir. 
  • Document procedures and results in narrative form for inclusion in a USGS Data Release and journal article.
  • Format data for publication in a USGS Data Release.
  • Produce metadata for the Data Release using a combination of custom and generic software tools.
  • Submit Data Release for review by USGS staff.
  • Reconcile USGS staff reviews.
  • Submit Data Release for publication through Science Base.
  • Communicate issues and progress with project staff.

Additional opportunities may include assistance with water quality field surveys, sample processing in the lab, and measuring discharge. 

Required expertise/skills:

  • Working knowledge of R statistical programming language.
  • An understanding of metabolism in aquatic systems.
  • Ability to follow directions and perform work safely and efficiently, unsupervised.

Description of Working Conditions:
Office work is primarily sedentary and focused.  Working remotely is possible.

Compensation is commensurate with the level of education and experience, as follows: 

  • Hourly rate without benefits: $30.93 per hour for a student who has completed a a master’s degree.
  • Work is intermittent and temporary. Scheduling is flexible with the contractor working up to 40 hours per week, with no set minimum weekly requirement. The current project will require about 240 hours with the option to modify the number of hours, increase funding available, or option to renew the contract. Contract may not be extended past 2 years.
  • Student is responsible for all costs of transportation to and from the principal duty station location. The Government does not provide housing, meals or other living expenses while working at the principal duty station. 
  • Transportation will be provided to and from field investigation site(s) if student is involved with fieldwork.  Meals/cost of food while at field investigation sites will be provided by the USGS in the same manner as for federal employees, in accordance with the Government Travel Regulations.
