Assistant Tax Advisor

If so, we have an opportunity that is just right for you!  We are looking to fill the Assistant Tax Advisor role that will provide advice and assistance to King County taxpayers and tax-related matters. This position is a temporary, non-benefit eligible assignment and will last approximately 3 months.

About the King County Office of the Ombuds

The King County Office of the Ombuds is an independent office within the legislative branch of government that reports to the King County Council. We respond to complaints related to a wide range of county functions including wetland regulation, permitting, building code enforcement, transit, law enforcement, jails, wastewater, solid waste, parks, public health, elections, procurement, and others.

Job Duties

Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. You will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work.
General responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the intake process which includes managing phone calls and emails.
  • Supporting the office mailings
  • Assisting with the preliminary research of comparable sales survey for residential appeals under the guidance of Tax Advisor III.
  • Reviewing issues and concerns presented to the office, analyzing patterns of systemic error and ensuring their correction.
  • Providing step-by-step instructions to callers that need assistance appealing property assessments, locating tax bills, and property characteristics.
  • Performing other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.


Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

We are looking for candidates who have relevant training or college degree, with a minimum of two or more years of successful work experience in customer service (i.e., answering phones, greeting clients, researching inquiries and responding to complaints).

Desired Experience and Knowledge: 

  • Working knowledge of modern office procedures and practices, including working knowledge of databases and desktop productivity software on personal computers, high customer service skills in correspondence and intake methods, and file and office management experience.
  • Skills in researching codes, laws, regulations, and procedures for administrative agencies governing real property valuation and taxation.
  • Sufficient math skills to accurately compute sums, percentages and statistics for tax assessments based on property valuation trends.
  • The ability to explain complex property assessment/tax issues in clear, accurate, and accessible terms to a wide audience.

Ideal candidates will possess: 

  • Knowledge of and skill in researching applicable codes, laws, regulations, and procedures governing property valuation and taxation.
  • High emotional intelligence and public relations skills to communicate tactfully to diverse group of customers and outlets.
  • Excellent organization, project management, and communication skills.

Work Schedule
This is an hourly, at-will, overtime-eligible position that is not eligible for the county Career Service system. The standard workweek is 20 hours. Non-traditional work hours and travel throughout King County may occasionally be required. This position is a temporary, non-benefit eligible assignment and will last approximately 3 months.

The work associated with this position will be performed predominantly in a hybrid work environment, working in the office and at home. Employees must reside in Washington State and within a reasonable distance of their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. If selected for this position, you must be available for periodic in-person work.
You must have a secure and reliable internet connection for remote work-a minimum of 30 megabits per second download speed to accommodate video meetings. All staff must commit to standards related to independence, ethics, code of conduct, team engagement, and telework.
