What to Expect-

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Fish Hatchery Technician,

Will Assist with the Mayfield Net Pen Project which includes:

  • Assists in feeding juvenile salmonids. Assist in incubation room picking eggs, ponding fry from incubators to juvenile raceways and troughs. Assist with juvenile weigh samples and CV’s, inventory splits of juveniles and planting smolts.
  • Vacuums juvenile raceways and troughs.
  • Assists in seining ponds, spawning, mass marking and surplus activities.
  • Performs grounds care and maintenance, repairs equipment and facilities.
  • Assists in taking and recording data.
  • Occasionally drives truck to deliver supplies and equipment.

 

Working Conditions: 

Work Setting, including hazards: Work is strenuous and performed outdoors in all weather conditions and varying levels of daylight. Position will be required to repetitively lift up to 50lbs. Employee will use respirator and other PPE while working with various chemicals used at facility. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.

Schedule: Rotating schedule of four ten-hour shifts. 

Tools and Equipment: Hand tools and some power tools, pressure washer, and forklift.

Customer Interactions: Some interaction with public and volunteers.

 

Qualifications:

Required Qualification: High School Diploma or GED

Required Licenses: Valid driver’s license

 

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have experience working in a hatchery setting.

These positions are in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Hatchery Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish Hatchery Professionals (WAFHP).
