Job Summary:

 

This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Temporary Biological Sciences Research Technician 2 position for the Mid-Columbia Agricultural Research and Extension Center at Oregon State University (OSU ).

 

This position supports the Fruit Tree Extension research and extension program in Hood River and Wasco Counties. The horticulture program primarily focuses on conducting research and outreach related to fresh sweet cherry and pear production systems in the Mid-Columbia area. Responsibilities for this role include assisting with indoor laboratory work, orchard-based fieldwork, and data entry.

Key Responsibilities

 

50% Laboratory Work:

 

• Remove fruit tree buds from the freezer

• Cutting fruit buds with a scalpel

• Dissecting tree graft unions

• Recording laboratory data

• Taking photos of specimens

• Assisting in basic laboratory upkeep, such as organizing and cleaning

 

25% Field Work:

 

• Collecting tree fruit buds

• Measuring tree growth (requires bending)

• Assist with the collection of soil and plant samples

• Recording field data

 

20% Data Management:

 

• Entering data from paper into Excel Using Box for data storage

• Summarizes data

 

5% Miscellaneous:

 

• Assist with setting up extension events by moving tables, chairs, and equipment Assist in order procurement

 

What You Will Need

 

Two years of college-level courses in biological sciences or a closely related field and one year of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

Keen attention to details

Follows written and verbal direction

Ability to perform repetitive tasks

Can work outdoors in poor condition and on uneven ground

Keeps organized, clear records

Basic excel skills (sums, averages, making graphs)

Basic computer skills (email, file sharing, Word)

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

This position is based at the Mid-Columbia Agricultural Research and Extension Center (MCAREC ) in Hood River, with some travel required between Hood River and The Dalles. The role also requires operating a motor vehicle to travel to research sites at MCAREC and in neighboring orchards. The work often involves outdoor research activities on uneven terrain and in various weather conditions, including cold, heat, wet, and dusty environments.
