Job Summary:

 

This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 20-30 hours per week) Temporary Biological Sciences Research Technician 1 position for the College of Forestry, Forest Ecosystems and Society at Oregon State University (OSU ).

 

This position will provide short-term assistance with several research projects currently underway in the laboratory and greenhouse. Information about the research group can be found at http://people.forestry.oregonstate.edu/steve-strauss/home-page.

Key Responsibilities

 

75% – Perform plant tissue culture using sterile technique, propagate hop plantlets in tissue culture, collect data for plant transformation experiments, and conduct experiments that use common molecular biology techniques (e.g. nucleic acid extractions, primer design, PCR , gel electrophoresis, transformation, fluorescence microscopy, and fluorescence imaging).

 

10% - Clean and maintain laboratory work areas, as needed.

 

10% - Direct and train student employees, as needed. Interact respectfully and professionally with all research team members in the performance of all duties and contribute to an inclusive, welcoming work environment.

 

5% – Conduct greenhouse work including potting/re-potting, trimming plants, moving plants, fertilizing plants, monitoring pests, watering, keeping the greenhouse clean, collecting data, and taking photos.

 

What You Will Need

 

Experience with media prep, sterile technique, experience with performing tissue culture sterile transfers, experience propagating hop plantlets in tissue culture, experience with data collection in plant transformation experiments, and experience with common molecular biology techniques (e.g., nucleic acid extraction, PCR , gel electrophoresis).

 

Demonstrated ability to contribute to an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming workplace environment for individuals with a range of different backgrounds, identities, perspectives, and/or life experiences.

 

What We Would Like You to Have


 

• Previous experience in a biotechnology laboratory.

• Previous experience relating to regulation and containment of transgenic organisms and regulated material.

• Previous experience with common DNA sequence analyses.

• Previous experience with CRISPR /Cas-9 tools.

 

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

• This position requires the ability to work in the laboratory and greenhouses.

• Some weekend work will be required for continuity of experiments.

• This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
