Eastern Washington University Community Advisor Job Description

Community Advisors (CAs) are employees of Housing and Residential Life in the Division of Student Affairs, working to build positive, inclusive residence hall communities. They support departmental objectives and initiatives, academic success initiatives, and partnerships with Maintenance, Custodial, and Dining staff while maintaining a flexible, student-focused approach. CAs affirm university policies to ensure non-discriminatory environments and actively pursue growth in areas like culture, diversity, and inclusion. Success in the role requires credibility, positive role modeling, strong rapport with residents, and alignment with the department’s vision and values.

Terms of Employment:

This position…

  • Is an academic year position. (September 2025 - June 2026)
  • Requires living in EWU On-Campus Housing.
  • Will work an average of 19 hours per week including weekends and evenings and will not be eligible for other student employment positions at EWU while under contract as a Community Advisor.
  • Reports to the Residential Life Coordinators in Housing and Residential Life.
  • Requires a background check completed through EWU Student Employment.
  • Compensates with room and board (housing and meal plan) and a small monthly stipend.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 at the time of hire.
  • Maintain a quarterly and cumulative 2.5 GPA.
  • Maintain status as a full-time student at EWU.
  • Demonstrate customer service and people skills.
  • Demonstrate reliability, responsiveness, willingness to take direction and follow guidance.
  • Demonstrate a professional demeanor.
  • Effectively communicate with a diverse population via phone, in person, or electronic communications.
  • Willing to pursue growth in areas like culture, diversity, and inclusion.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in CA position at EWU or equivalent position at another University/Community College.
  • Previous experience responding to crisis situations.
  • Experience living in EWU on-campus housing preferred.
  • Experience with event planning.

Working Conditions

The CA position is routinely a night and weekend role with early morning and late night hours. CAs encounter the following circumstances:

  • Lifting up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
  • Having an unpredictable and dynamic work schedule/setting.
  • Responding calmly to high risk medical and emergency situations (i.e. roommate disagreements, Title IX, medical transports, etc.) following standardized procedures.
  • Leading and managing large groups in both routine and emergency situations
  • Reside and maintain visibility on the assigned floor.

 

 

Position Expectations

Community Building: Residential Education Model 

  • Community Development:
    • Utilize resident input to plan applicable social or community activities as set by the supervisor, utilizing event funds from Student Accounting.
    • Take residents to large scale events on campus.
    • Participate in Homecoming activities.
    • Promote an inclusive and diverse community by reporting bias and Title IX related concerns.
    • Role model positive behaviors such as time management, going to class, abiding by policies and procedures, and utilizing campus resources.
  • Learning/Curriculum/Admin:
    • Conduct Hygiene - Health and Safety Checks once a quarter.
    • Conduct Floor Meetings to ensure dissemination of important information to residents.
    • Support in the facilitation of tabling and activities that connect students to resources on-campus.
    • Provide and facilitate roommate agreements, follow-up, and mediation.
    • Assist Housing and Residential Life in the facilitation of Warm Body Counts, in order to verify occupancy.
    • Post Bulletin Board materials on assigned floor when provided.
    • Facilitate conversations between residents in regards to policy, courtesy, and community standards.
    • Knowledge of campus resources is essential to refer and direct students to appropriate resources.
  • Individualized Support (Intentional Connections):
    • Learn names and develop individual rapport with each resident on the assigned floor.
    • Have continuous one on one conversations with each resident on the floor.
    • Follow up with residents in matters of policy, courtesy, academic success, and the general welfare and standards.
    • Maintain current knowledge of campus resources and applicable student referral processes.

Team Relationships

  • Support and role model a positive team approach.
  • Be supportive of teammates’ events.
  • Positively confront issues or behaviors that do not align with HRL values and policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality about student and staff issues discussed with supervisor and during staff meetings.

Administrative

  • Perform administrative tasks as assigned by professional staff.
  • Writing Maxient reports in required time frame for crises, conduct, Title IX, concern, crime, maintenance, or directed by supervisor.
  • Utilize Starrez software to process mail, review occupancy, log resident interactions, and manage equipment check-out process
  • Utilize EagleSync to complete the event planning process.
  • Checking staff mailboxes, hanging up, and taking down advertisements several times a week
  • Work in the Hall Office 3 hours each week between M-F.
  • Check email and Microsoft Teams at least once daily and respond as requested in a timely manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Meetings

  • Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings and monthly in-service trainings scheduled by the supervisor.
  • Attend community and all-hall meetings as required by supervisor.
  • Attend weekly hall or community council.
  • Meet one on one with your supervisor as scheduled. (Typically weekly or bi-weekly)
  • Complete and submit weekly 1:1 form.

On-Call

  • Weekday Evening On-Call (Sunday-Thursday) is 9 PM – 8 AM, during which time the CA must be in the hall and available to students. Staff are expected to do three (3) sets of rounds between 9pm and 12am. The on-call phone is to be picked up by 9 PM.
  • Weekend on-call (Friday and Saturday) consists of being on campus and available via the on-call phone during daytime hours, working office shifts, and available via standard evening duty procedures during evening hours. Staff members are expected to do four (4) sets of rounds. The on-call phone is to be picked up by 9 PM Friday and held until 9 PM Sunday.
  • Expected to be part of “all staff on-campus weekends” as determined by the Office of Housing and Residential Life. (See Important dates for staff members)
  • The on-call times may be adjusted 1-2 hours based on availability of Office Workers and Supervisor discretion.
  • On-Call responsibilities include but are not limited to: rounds log, express checkouts, room inspections, crisis response, policy enforcement, and maintenance requests.

Policy Education and Enforcement

  • Use training tools and skills to exercise critical thinking and be able to form a judgment about how to handle situations.
  • Understand, abide by, and support the guidelines for student behavior in the Residential Life Living Guide and Student Conduct Code.
  • Address inappropriate behavior when it occurs and take necessary follow-up measures (including completing written documentation and follow up conversations with residents within 24 hours of occurrence).
  • Be aware of early signs of problems and work with department and university staff to implement preventative and remedial measures (noise complaints, vandalism, theft, etc.)

Stress and Time Management

  • Effectively manage your academics, CA position responsibilities, and other involvement activities on campus.
  • CAs need to successfully manage personal stress and emotions so that it doesn’t impair their ability to perform their CA responsibilities.
  • Communicate with supervisor when stressors inhibit job responsibilities

Training

  • Required to attend all on-going training as defined by the Housing and Residential Staff.
  • Dates and times of training will be provided before and during employment.
    • Fall Training takes place during the month of September.
    • Winter Training takes place the Saturday before the start of Winter Quarter

 

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.
